Community Day in the Parks
In the spring the Parks Board, Greenscape Commission, and Beech Grove Promoters Club partner with the Parks Department for a Community Day in the Parks. Volunteers from other community organizations, concerned citizens, and local officials give their time as well to help get our parks ready for the busy summer season.
In 2014 volunteers removed the many fallen tree branches from the harsh winter and spruced up the planting beds around the Elton H. Geshwiler fountain. Earlier in the week, they assisted with putting together new bleachers for the Little League diamonds at Hartman Park. In 2013 the Community Day project was installing fence cap on the Dick Templin Field ball diamond in Sarah T. Bolton Park. We also had a number of nursing students from the University of Indianapolis volunteer their time to pick up fallen sticks and limbs throughout the park, which was a great help in preparing for the mowing season. In 2012 volunteers weeded and mulched the flower beds at the War Memorial and the Elton H. Geshwiler Fountain and placed mulch around trees in those lawn areas. In 2011 efforts focused on Hartman Park and South Grove Park. Dugouts and outbuildings were painted, shelters cleaned, and winter debris picked up, while Little League parents and volunteers readied the ball diamonds and concession stand for their Opening Day. In 2010 volunteers worked many hours in Sarah T. Bolton Park, painting restroom buildings, mulching flower beds, and removing accumulated winter debris. Parks patrons can help keep our parks clean throughout the year by depositing trash in one of the many receptacles located throughout the parks. |
