The Fire Department is sponsoring 2 families.

The BG Fire Department Union, Local 416 is sponsoring 2 families from Hurricane Katrina. We believe the first step in recovering from a disaster like this is having a stable family environment, someplace to call home. So we are providing a home to each family to use.

Most of the furniture and all appliances have been donated by members, or from special organizations and people listed below. These items will be given to the families, so they can take it with them if they ever plan to move back.

Family 1
This Family consists of a mother, a 18 year old daughter with a 2 year old boy, and a uncle who was air lifted off a roof, 5 days after Katrina hit.
Their home was in the St. Bernard Parish, Louisiana area. (See picture below)
The uncle had stayed 4 nights on the roof and was then airlifted, and moved by air boat and was evacuated to Atlanta.  All that time, he wasn’t sure if his family had survived.  He said the worst part was that when it got dark, you couldn’t see anything, however, you could hear people screaming for help. The family has never seen snow but they think facing the cold will be easy compared to what they have just been through.  (We’ll see if we have a blizzard this winter!!)

Family 2
This Family consists of a mother, a 17 year old boy, and a 19 year old daughter with a 3 year old girl.
Their home was completely destroyed in New Orleans and they do not wish to move back.
They along with her older son's family evacuated New Orleans to Lafayette, Louisiana. They moved inland to a hotel where they had reservations for, but it was completely filled when they got there. They were going to stay in the bar area of the hotel with some others when the local FD came and found other arrangements for them. This family was then taken in by a local FD family for awhile.
Both families then decided to move to the Indy area were they had other family located after hearing that their home was under water and destroyed. They got a bus ride up here, only bringing with them a few suite cases of belongings with them, they have lost everything. So 3 families have been living together for the last week in one home and they had asked the Red Cross for help and that is when they placed this family with us. The older son's family was placed also in a home provided through a church.
The mother was very surprised to see that a 2nd FD has come to their aid again.

We want to give a special thank you to these people below who have helped us a lot with this project.
